Müller built the first version of Browser Use in days with his co-founder at ETH Zurich, and the open-source project became one of the most popular tools for letting AI agents use websites.
Magnus Müller is co-founder and CEO of Browser Use, a San Francisco, California, company whose open-source library lets AI agents click, type and move through websites, plus a cloud service that runs browsers for those agents.
Growing Up in a Village in Germany
He grew up in a German village of about 500 people, which he has described as home to 5,000 cows, a cheese factory and a bakery, in an interview with Ambitious x Driven. From age 16 he worked in the cheese factory making 80-kilogram blocks of cheese.
Studying Data Science at ETH Zurich
He studied cognitive science at Osnabrück University from 2020 to 2022 and spent an exchange term at the National University of Singapore. During the pandemic he left Germany to travel and work remotely, and in Singapore he did research for a Cambridge program, where he met researchers from ETH Zurich. He then began a master's in data science at ETH, which he later paused, and ran an earlier startup called Greenway.
Launching Browser Use
At ETH's Student Project House he teamed up with Gregor Žunič, who had posted that he wanted to build something more ambitious. The two built a prototype that let a language model act in a web browser within days and posted it to Hacker News, where it spread quickly. They joined Y Combinator's Winter 2025 batch, and by early 2025 the project had passed 50,000 GitHub stars, according to Browser Use.
Personal Life
He has described hitchhiking from Germany to Iran with a friend over six weeks, sleeping in hammocks in forests along the way.
