Joanne Chen built her first webpage for a paying client at age nine, after her father, a mathematician, and her mother, a computer scientist, taught her to program. As a general partner at Foundation Capital she invests in AI-first business software and data platforms, and she gave the TED talk "Confessions of an AI Investor."
Growing up in Canada, studying at Berkeley
She grew up in Canada and earned a B.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Cisco, Jefferies and Hyde Park Angels
She started as an engineer at Cisco Systems, then co-founded a mobile gaming company. She spent years at Jefferies & Company helping technology companies through IPOs and acquisitions, and at Probitas Partners advising venture firms on fundraising. She was an angel investor with Hyde Park Angels for two years before joining Foundation in 2014.

She has invested in Jasper, SafelyYou, Tonkean, Tennr, Arcade and CaptivateIQ. Earlier she sat on the boards of Tubi, acquired by Fox, Mya, acquired by Stepstone, and EraDB, acquired by ServiceNow.
She has spoken at CES, SXSW and Web Summit, and in her TED talk she spoke about the impact of AI on society.
