Patrini trained his first deepfake detector as a postdoctoral researcher in Amsterdam in 2018 and now runs Sensity AI, a profitable detection company whose forensic tools are deployed in more than 30 countries.
Giorgio Patrini is co-founder and CEO of Sensity AI, an Amsterdam, Netherlands, company that detects deepfake images, video and audio and writes forensic reports for investigators. He is a machine learning researcher who began working on deepfake detection in 2018.
Studying in Milan, Italy
He earned bachelor's and master's degrees at the Polytechnic University of Milan, Italy, with a thesis on computing Nash equilibria, according to his personal site.
In 2012 he co-founded Waynaut, a mobility startup that Lastminute.com later acquired.
Research in Australia and Amsterdam
He completed a PhD at the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia, with a thesis on weakly supervised learning and privacy, and built privacy-preserving machine learning systems at Data61, a research unit of the Australian federal government. He then joined the University of Amsterdam as a postdoctoral researcher working on deep generative models with Max Welling.
Founding Deeptrace
In March 2018 he trained a deepfake detector, then teamed up with Francesco Cavalli, and the two founded the company late that year, according to Sensity. It was first called Deeptrace.
Its investigation into deepfake bots on Telegram was later covered by The Washington Post, Wired and the BBC.
In January 2026 Sensity said it had tripled its revenue in 2025 and was profitable, according to the company.
