Ahmed spent years building AI voice cloning at Resemble AI and turned what he learned about how synthetic speech is made into a detector for deepfake audio, video and images, including inside live calls.
Zohaib Ahmed is co-founder and CEO of Resemble AI, a company with offices in Toronto, Ontario, and San Francisco, California, that detects AI-generated voices, video and images, including during live video calls. He is a software engineer who started out making synthetic voices and now sells tools to catch them.
Engineering Years at Magic Leap
He worked as a software engineer at BlackBerry and at the travel search site Hipmunk, then became a lead software engineer at Magic Leap, the augmented reality headset maker, according to TechCrunch.
Starting Resemble With Saqib Muhammad
He and Saqib Muhammad founded Resemble in 2019 after seeing that recorded voices in video games could not keep up with how often studios updated their games, according to the company's about page. Their answer was AI voice generation, and building it meant learning how speech models are trained and what makes their output convincing. "Once the voice is created, the user owns all rights to that voice," he told TechCrunch in 2023.
Turning Toward Deepfake Detection
As fake voices and faces became a fraud problem, Resemble moved its focus to detection. In December 2025 Resemble released Detect-3B Omni, a model it says works across 38 languages, SiliconANGLE reported. He described it as an "inverse generative model" that looks for the traces generative systems leave in raw audio and video, so it can check a call without first enrolling anyone's voice or face.
"Just because something is difficult doesn't mean despair is the only choice," he told SiliconANGLE. "The only way to fight AI is with AI."
