Why watch

Carroll left intelligence-community data fusion work with a hard lesson: sharing sensitive data safely was slower than collecting it, so he built Immuta to automate cloud data access without handing analysts a free-for-all.

Matthew Carroll is founder and chief executive of Immuta, a Boston, Massachusetts-based platform that helps enterprises control access to analytical data in the cloud. He co-founded the company in 2015 after years of watching intelligence teams struggle to share sensitive datasets without creating new risk.

Learning Data Sharing the Hard Way in Baghdad

As a U.S. Army officer in Baghdad he managed streams of intelligence data and saw that the cloud problem for his community was not cheaper storage but faster, safer sharing, according to a Forbes profile. After the Army he stayed close to the intelligence world and eventually served as chief technology officer of the Defense Intelligence Group at Computer Sciences Corporation, where he ran data fusion programs.

Starting Immuta With Touw and Schiller

He left CSC to found Immuta with Steven Touw and Michael Schiller, bringing the same access-control problems into commercial cloud analytics. The company's pitch, as Carroll has framed it on the Immuta company page, is that data access should move fast without losing trust, with policies that travel with data across warehouses and compute engines.

Building Cloud Data Access for Regulated Teams

Today Immuta sells sensitive-data discovery, access control and monitoring to financial services, healthcare, life sciences and public-sector customers, according to his Forbes Technology Council bio. Carroll still runs the company as CEO and founder from the Boston area, arguing that governance teams need one place to write rules that follow data wherever analysts and AI agents work.
