Why watch

Sunak turned a post-acquisition contract headache into an AI contract lifecycle company for in-house legal teams.

Vishal Sunak is co-founder of LinkSquares, a Boston, Massachusetts, AI contract management company for in-house legal teams. He co-founded the company in 2015 with Chris Combs and served as chief executive through its first decade.

Seeing Contract Pain After Backupify

Sunak and Combs started LinkSquares after participating in the acquisition of Backupify, the company where they had worked, and watching how hard enterprise contracts were to find and manage during the deal process, as Sunak told LawNext. That experience pushed them to build contract analysis and lifecycle tools rather than another generic document store.

Bootstrapping LinkSquares into Legal Departments

They bootstrapped early, then raised venture capital as LinkSquares expanded from post-signature analysis into drafting and approval workflows. By 2020 the company had raised a Series A that brought total financing to $21 million and was reporting rapid year-over-year growth while selling into corporate legal departments.

Handing Daily Leadership to Chris Combs

In February 2025 LinkSquares announced Sunak was stepping down from daily CEO responsibilities while remaining closely connected as a founder, with Combs appointed interim chief executive, according to the company's leadership transition note. Keeping product depth on contracts while the company scales under new day-to-day leadership is the hard turn after a founder-led decade.

Personal Life

Sunak built LinkSquares in Boston. Public interviews focus on in-house legal workflows and the Backupify acquisition lesson more than private hobbies.
