Patent AI UCL AI PhD
Parsonson is building AI tools made for patent attorneys, betting that patent work needs software that understands both the technology and the law.
Chris Parsonson is co-founder and CEO of Solve Intelligence, which builds AI software for drafting patents and handling patent prosecution and litigation work. He founded it in 2023 with Angus Parsonson, the chief technology officer, and Sanj Ahilan, the chief research officer.
From AI research to patents
Parsonson and Ahilan both completed PhDs in artificial intelligence at University College London and ran into the cost and time of getting patents while working at tech companies including Huawei and Dyson. Parsonson also heard from his girlfriend, a patent attorney, that patent attorneys had little software to work with beyond Microsoft Word, TechCrunch reported.
Technology and law in one document
“Patents are fundamentally different from other areas of legal tech because they intersect both technology and patent law,” he said, since drafting a patent takes deep technical knowledge as well as legal skill. He has pushed back on firms that refuse AI tools over confidentiality. “Attorneys who turn us down due to confidentiality concerns generally do not yet understand the difference between large language model training and inference,” he said, adding that he expected that hesitation to fade as people learn more about AI.
