Deep tech Applied AI
He backs AI that developers can build into real software, as in DCVC's lead on TypeSafe AI's seed round.
James Hardiman trained in engineering physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and has invested at DCVC since 2013, shortly after the firm raised its first institutional fund. A general partner, he looks for technologies that characterize, model or manipulate biological systems, for robotics and automation, and for AI applied to problems in specific industries.
Healthcare data before venture
Before investing he worked on data-driven sales and marketing strategy for large life-science and healthcare companies. His work also covered large-scale healthcare data analysis, new-materials research and semiconductor processing, and he earned an MBA at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
Leading TypeSafe AI's seed round
In September 2026 DCVC led the $40 million seed round for TypeSafe AI, a San Francisco, California, lab building fast, predictable AI models meant to run inside ordinary software. "TypeSafe is approaching one of the biggest remaining challenges in AI: turning increasingly capable models into technology that developers can reliably build into products at scale," Hardiman said in the announcement.
