Founder and CEO · Nomic AI
AI for the built world Machine learning
Mulyar is rebuilding Nomic around the drawings, specifications, and submittals that engineers still check by hand, after the open-source AI tools that made the company known were absorbed by the large model makers.
Andriy Mulyar is founder and CEO of Nomic AI, whose AI agents review drawings, specifications, and submittals for architecture, engineering, and construction firms and cite the sheet or code section behind each finding. He started Nomic in New York City in 2022 with Brandon Duderstadt, a former colleague at Rad AI, and led engineering as CTO before becoming CEO in 2024.
From Ukraine to a Research Lab at VCU
Mulyar’s family moved from Ukraine to the suburbs of Richmond, Virginia, when he was four. In high school he joined a Virginia Commonwealth University program that places students in engineering research labs, which is where he first worked on natural language processing.
He enrolled at VCU on a Wright Engineering Access Scholarship and earned a dual degree in mathematics and computer science, doing language-processing research with Professor Bridget McInnes. “I wouldn’t have been able to work on a lot of the research that I did without funding from that scholarship program,” he told the college in 2024.
Radiology Reports at Rad AI and a PhD at NYU
After graduating in 2020, he joined Rad AI as a machine learning engineer, training language models on millions of radiology reports. In September 2021 he started a PhD in machine learning at NYU’s Courant Institute, working on interpretability, and he left in April 2022 to found Nomic.
GPT4All and Open Tools for AI Data
Nomic’s first products were Atlas, a tool for exploring large datasets, the GPT4All project for running language models on personal computers, and the open Nomic Embed models. The company raised a $17 million Series A led by Coatue in 2023, and Forbes named Mulyar to its 2024 30 Under 30 list for enterprise technology.
Turning Nomic Toward the Built World
In November 2025 Nomic announced a new platform for architecture, engineering, and construction firms. Mulyar later told AEC Magazine that revenue in the earlier business had flattened: “The product we were building got consumed by the foundation model companies into their API layer.”
He sees the bottleneck in engineering review as a human one, describing the constraint as “the mental bandwidth of our senior engineering staff’s ability to review things.” In September 2026, the engineering firms Arcadis and Aurecon invested in Nomic in a strategic round.
