Why watch

Brodeur-Urbas started Gumloop as a side project in a Vancouver bedroom and turned it into an AI agent builder that employees at Shopify, Ramp, and Instacart use without engineers.

Max Brodeur-Urbas is co-founder and CEO of Gumloop, a San Francisco, California, company founded in Vancouver, British Columbia, that lets employees without coding skills build AI agents and workflows connected to their company's data and apps.

Engineering at Microsoft

Brodeur-Urbas worked as a software engineer at Microsoft, and his co-founder, Rahul Behal, was a software developer at Amazon Web Services, TechCrunch reported. The two were classmates at McGill University. In a company video, Brodeur-Urbas said they met in class after his first co-founder quit on him, BetaKit reported.

Starting AgentHub in a Vancouver Bedroom

Gumloop began as a side project to automate dull digital tasks. It started as a wrapper for the open-source app Auto-GPT, then became a proof of concept, and was officially founded in April 2023 under the name AgentHub, working out of a bedroom in Vancouver. It joined Y Combinator's Winter 2024 batch and later renamed itself Gumloop, in part to sound friendlier to people who do not code.

Moving Gumloop to San Francisco

The company later moved to San Francisco. Brodeur-Urbas had planned to build "a 10-person, billion-dollar company," he told TechCrunch, but strong demand from enterprise customers led him to hire a sales team and grow engineering. Gumloop had 24 employees in March 2026. He has said he wants Canadians to be able to join a fast-growing AI startup "without needing to flee the country."
