Why watch

Wang is building Alex so recruiters can have a real first conversation with every applicant, by phone or video, instead of judging them by a resume.

Aaron Wang is co-founder and CEO of Alex, a company in San Francisco, California, that makes an AI recruiter that runs first-round phone and video interviews. He started it with John Rytel. The company went through Y Combinator under the name Apriora before renaming itself after its product.

Quant finance and Facebook AI

Wang studied computer science, applied math, and economics at Brown University, according to his Y Combinator profile. Before Alex he worked in quantitative finance at a hedge fund and at Facebook AI.

Ten minutes beats a profile

Alex calls or video-interviews applicants soon after they apply and writes its notes into the employer's applicant tracking system. Wang argues that a short conversation says more than a resume. “Our thesis is that a 10-minute conversation with you tells me a whole lot more about you than your LinkedIn profile does,” he told TechCrunch. The company works at large scale. “Our AI recruiter does thousands of interviews a day and helps people get hired at some of the biggest companies in the world,” he said.
