Patents R&D software

Why watch

Gomez is trying to cut the years it takes to turn an inventor's idea into a granted patent, and Ankar already counts L'Oréal and the law firm Vorys among its customers.

“The tools to do so were incredibly legacy or just nonexistent. It was like a hodgepodge of manual processes,” Tamar Gomez told Fortune about getting patents for new technology. She is co-founder and CEO of Ankar, a London, United Kingdom company whose AI platform helps R&D and patent teams capture inventions, search prior art, draft claims, and answer examiners.

Palantir and Helsing

Gomez worked as a deployment strategist at Palantir, the data software company, and later in product at Helsing, the European defense AI company, according to Ankar's about page. Fortune describes her background as business-focused, in contrast to her co-founder's data science training.

Patents Took Years

At Palantir, Gomez and Wiem Gharbi both ran into the slow process of patenting new technology. Turning an inventor's idea into a patent the company could use as an asset “took years, basically,” she told Fortune. Tech.eu reported that in her later product job in defense tech she saw innovation data tracked through tickets and spreadsheets. The pair founded Ankar in 2024 and named it after an all-knowing knight from pre-Islamic poetry.

Scaling Ankar

In December 2025 Ankar raised a $20 million Series A led by Atomico, with Index Ventures, Norrsken VC, and Daphni, bringing its total funding to $24 million. The company said it would use the money to double its 20-person team and grow in Europe and the US.
