Sandhya Venkatachalam
Founder and Managing Partner
Axiom Partners
Sandhya Venkatachalam is founder and managing partner of Axiom Partners, a Menlo Park, California early-stage firm whose debut fund is $52 million. Before Axiom she was a partner at Khosla Ventures and a general partner at Social Capital, and she spent the first half of her career as an operator: product leadership at a data-center hardware company later sold to Cisco, then product work at Skype before its sale to Microsoft. "Contrarian and wrong is relatively useless," she has said. "Contrarian and right, that's the goal."
The Groq check that shaped the thesis
At Social Capital she led the firm's first investment into Groq, meeting founder Jonathan Ross after tracing why Google was building its own chips. In a September 2026 Crunchbase News interview she recalled that in 2016 she "barely understood inference," but believed that if large models spread, builders would need infrastructure underneath them. That early check, years before ChatGPT, still anchors how she talks about timing: be a little early, stay patient, and invest while the answer is still emerging.
Axiom's "AI for the real world" brief
Axiom writes checks of roughly $100,000 to $2.5 million and plans on the order of 35 investments from the first fund, with Venkatachalam expecting about half to fail. The firm looks past crowded AI infrastructure and familiar founder résumés toward companies that use AI to deliver work in industries such as construction, industrials, and insurance. She has described building the team around people who still ship AI products in other jobs, and using an internal "Axiom Brain" system to decide faster. Khosla Ventures is among the limited partners in the debut fund.
