Replicate
Ben Firshman is co-founder and CEO of Replicate, the platform he and Andreas Jansson built so developers can run open-source machine learning models in the cloud with a few lines of code. Before Replicate he created Fig, which became Docker Compose, and led open-source product work at Docker.
Docker Compose and the packaging habit
Firshman's earlier career ran through UK product work (including GOV.UK and This Is My Jam) and then Docker, where Compose became a default way developers define multi-container apps. On his personal site he also lists Cog (containers for machine learning), CLI Guidelines, Whalebrew, and arXiv Vanity. The through-line is packaging: make something hard to run become a standard box other people can trust.
Founding Replicate with Andreas Jansson
Firshman and Jansson met in London in 2012 at This Is My Jam. In a Sequoia spotlight, Firshman says the heart of Replicate is "taking all of these incredible new advances in AI and making them accessible to software engineers who don't understand those things, but know how to build great products." He framed the founding bet as a container for models: "If only we could define a standard box for machine learning models, then researchers could put their models inside it. They could run anywhere, and always keep on running."
Stable Diffusion night and the infra rewrite
When Stable Diffusion launched in 2022, Replicate traffic spiked while Firshman was home with COVID. He and Jansson rebuilt the infrastructure in roughly two weeks so the platform would hold. Later Llama 2 drove another growth surge. The company's public story stays close to that founding claim: open models should be runnable by product engineers, not only by ML specialists.
