Galbraith built Depot after years of waiting on slow Docker builds as a staff engineer, and is widening it into a CI system built for code written by agents.
Kyle Galbraith is co-founder and CEO of Depot, a build acceleration company for Docker images, GitHub Actions, and CI. He started it with Jacob Gillespie, who serves as chief technology officer.
Fighting Slow Builds at Thorn
The two worked together as staff engineers for four and a half years at Thorn and later Era Software, according to Depot's Y Combinator page. In Depot's launch notes they wrote that Docker image builds were a constant grind in those jobs, with a multi-platform build in GitHub Actions taking 45 minutes because of flaky networks, cache limits, and slow emulation.
Building the First Depot Prototype
They built a proof of concept for themselves, and it made their own container builds five times faster. "There's no way that's possible," he recalled telling Gillespie. Depot joined Y Combinator's Winter 2023 batch and has since added managed GitHub Actions runners, sandboxes, remote caching, and its own Depot CI engine.
Personal Life
Originally from Portland, Oregon, he relocated to Montpellier, France, in October 2022 with his wife, who is from the area, according to Depot's about page.
