Elder turned years of investment and defense modeling into Elder Research, a consultancy known for getting analytics into production, and his Target Shuffling method for checking whether a data mining result is real still shapes how its teams test models.
John Elder is the founder of Elder Research, a data science and AI consultancy based in Charlottesville, Virginia, that works for federal agencies and large companies. He started it in 1995, when predictive analytics was still mostly an academic subject, and built it into a firm of more than 150 people that the government technology contractor MANTECH acquired in December 2025.
Engineering Degrees at Rice University
Elder earned bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Rice University and a PhD in systems engineering from the University of Virginia, where he has taught optimization and data mining as an adjunct professor. Before founding his company he spent five years in aerospace and defense consulting, four years heading research at an investment management firm and two years in Rice's computational and applied mathematics department, according to his UC Berkeley Fisher Center biography.

The firm's early projects ranged from stock selection and credit scoring to fraud detection, and clients often came to it after a failed implementation or a model that never reached production, according to Elder Research's history. In 1996 Elder developed Target Shuffling, a way to test whether a data mining result is statistically real or a product of chance. In 2005 the company began contracting with U.S. defense and intelligence agencies on counterterrorism and counterintelligence work.
Elder co-wrote three books, on practical data mining, ensemble methods and text mining, and two of them won PROSE Awards, in 2009 and 2012. President George W. Bush appointed him to a five-year panel that guided technology for national security.
Stepping Back and the MANTECH Sale
In 2016 Gerhard Pilcher became chief executive and Elder moved to chairman of the board. When MANTECH bought the firm in December 2025, Elder said that while fewer than 20 percent of data science and AI projects across the industry make it out of the lab, "90 percent of our solutions are implemented, adopted and delivering real ROI," according to the acquisition announcement. The Elder Research team joined MANTECH's Data and AI Practice.
Personal Life
Elder is the father of five. His Elder Research biography says he is "grateful to be a follower of Christ."
