Why watch

Altman turned an internal fix for his payments company's API docs into Redoc, an open-source renderer used across the industry, and built Redocly around it.

Adam Altman is co-founder and CEO of Redocly, an API documentation company in Austin, Texas. He also founded Rebilly, a payments orchestration platform, and has started several companies since joining a dot-com startup as its seventh employee.

Playing Tennis at Claremont McKenna College

In a 2022 StoryHouse Review interview, he said he played on the tennis team at Claremont McKenna College and learned investing through its Student Investment Fund. After about three months in investment banking he joined iwin.com, then founded two digital ad bidding marketplaces and a movie subscription service before Rebilly.

Building Redoc Inside Rebilly

Rebilly adopted the OpenAPI standard, then called Swagger, in 2015 to keep its own APIs in order. The team found no documentation renderer it liked, so it built one, named it Redoc for Rebilly Documentation, and posted it on GitHub as open source. Developers adopted it widely, and Redocly grew out of that project. A contact on GitHub introduced him to Roman Hotsiy in Ukraine, who became his co-founder and now serves as CTO.

Personal Life

He lives in Austin and has described its tech community as generous and collaborative, crediting it with helping him start Redocly. He is a father of three.
