Why watch

Koberger has spent more than a decade on one problem, making API documentation interactive, and is now reshaping ReadMe so docs work for AI agents as well as developers.

Gregory Koberger is founder and CEO of ReadMe, a San Francisco company that hosts developer hubs for API companies. He grew up in Schaghticoke, New York, attended RIT, and moved to San Francisco, where he worked for Mozilla and freelanced for startups.

Building Docs Sites as a Freelancer

According to ReadMe's about page, he founded the company after building documentation sites for most of the startups he freelanced for. In a 2015 InfoQ interview he said he had wanted to work on documentation for about five years before he got started, and that Stripe and Twilio had shown how much good docs could do for a developer business.

Launching ReadMe in 2014

He described the early service to InfoQ as being "like WordPress for code and APIs": hosted docs where readers could try API calls on the page, references synced from GitHub, and suggested edits from anyone inside or outside a company. He also argued that documentation should change depending on who is reading it, an idea that still runs through ReadMe's personalized docs.

Preparing ReadMe for AI Agents

ReadMe's current plans put an MCP server and LLMs.txt on the free tier, add an AI linter and a GitHub writing assistant on Pro, and include Restless, a new API toolkit, according to its pricing page. He has led the company as CEO since its founding.

Personal Life

ReadMe's team page says that away from work he can be found drinking coffee or competing for Swarm mayorships.
