Midpage
Midpage is a New York legal research company whose platform covers more than 16 million US court opinions, statutes, and regulations, with AI research, drafting, an AI citator, and connections into Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity.
Solo attorneys, litigation boutiques, and law firm litigation teams that research and cite case law daily, plus legal tech teams that need primary-law data through an API.
Firms that need secondary sources and treatises from the big publishers, and lawyers outside US law.
Verdict
Midpage is one of the most interesting challengers to Westlaw and Lexis for case law research. LawSites called it the startup picking up where Casetext left off, its Proposition Search finds cases that support a stated point of law, and the Professional plan is a published $100 a month with no sales call. It lacks the secondary sources of the incumbents, so many firms will run it next to one of them.
Score Breakdown
These scores cover how complete Midpage's case law and citator are, how precise its search is, how well it drafts and checks citations, and how it fits with AI assistants and developer tools, and then how it does as a company on innovation, communication, pricing, and contract terms.
Who Uses Midpage, Where It Fits on Price, and Its Competitors
Midpage is used by solo attorneys, litigation boutiques, and litigation teams at midsize and large law firms, plus law students and faculty, and the company says more than 10,000 litigators and 300 law firms use the platform or its integrations. It covers federal case law, case law from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., statutes, regulations, and agency guidance, with an AI citator that shows how later courts treated an opinion. Lawyers use it to find cases, draft briefs and memos, check citations, and pull dockets, and its data also sits inside Perplexity, Litera, Noxtua, and BriefCatch.
On price, Midpage sits well below the incumbents: Professional is $100 per seat per month, or $80 billed annually, and law students and faculty pay $25. Its main competitors are Westlaw and Lexis, and among AI-first tools, Paxton, Alexi, and Clearbrief.

| Data and API access | Custom | APIs, MCP tools, and database access for legal tech and AI products, priced through sales. |

How Well Midpage Fits Each Legal Research Use Case
We rated Midpage against the situations lawyers bring to a legal research tool, drawing on its homepage, pricing page, company page, and LawSites coverage from June 2025.
| Use case | Fit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Finding cases to support a proposition | Strong | Proposition Search returns the cases that most directly support a stated point of law, with columns to narrow results. |
| Cite checking a brief | Strong | Midpage checks a draft's citations and its AI citator shows treatment with supporting quotations. |
| Research inside Claude or ChatGPT | Strong | Integrations bring case law, statutes, and regulations into Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, with links to sources. |
| Drafting briefs and memos | Mixed | Drafting from research and uploads is available, and the output still needs a lawyer's edit. |
| Secondary sources and treatises | Weak | Midpage focuses on primary law, so firms that rely on treatises keep Westlaw or Lexis. |
| Legal tech teams that need data | Strong | APIs, MCP, and database access serve products like Perplexity and Litera. |
Review Excerpts
These excerpts come from LawSites coverage by legal tech journalist Bob Ambrogi and from the buyer concern we found in Midpage's coverage limits. Paid reviews and pay-for-play sites were excluded.
“The startup is making clever use of AI to provide legal research features that allow users to quickly analyze and narrow search results across multiple dimensions.”
“There is a strong argument to be made that Midpage is picking up the mantle from where Casetext left off.”
“Case law search is fast and cheap, but I still need Westlaw for treatises and secondary sources, so it adds a subscription for us.”
