Model routing Machine learning research

Why watch

Tung brings a research career in machine learning for communication systems to Not Diamond, where he leads the technology that routes each request to the best AI model.

Tze-Yang Tung is co-founder and CTO of Not Diamond, whose model router and prompt tools help developers send each request to the AI model most likely to answer it well while cutting cost. Not Diamond lists him alongside CEO Tomás Hernando Kofman and COO Jeffrey Akiki.

Imperial College and a Prize-Winning Thesis

Tung earned a first-class BEng in electrical and electronic engineering at Imperial College London, where his undergraduate thesis on wireless image transmission won an IEEE dissertation prize in telecommunications, according to his CV. He then took an MSc at the University of Southern California, working on molecular communications.

He returned to Imperial for a PhD, finished in 2022, on what his thesis calls semantic and effective communications, using deep learning to compress and transmit video and studying how AI agents learn to communicate with each other.

WAIveform and Bell Labs

During the PhD he co-founded WAIveform, a wireless video delivery startup that his CV says raised £250,000 from the European Research Council. From 2023 he was a member of technical staff in radio systems research at Nokia Bell Labs, where he led work on distributed training for semantic communications.

Routing Between Models

At Not Diamond, Tung leads the technology behind a company that argues no single AI model will win every task. Its about page lists investors including Jeff Dean, Julien Chaumond, and Ion Stoica.
