Why watch

Stevenson watched legal fees eat half of his first startup's money, and Spellbook, the AI contract drafting and review tool he co-founded, is now used by thousands of law firms and in-house legal teams.

Scott Stevenson is co-founder and CEO of Spellbook, a Toronto, Ontario, company whose AI drafts and reviews contracts inside Microsoft Word for law firms and in-house legal teams.

Studying Engineering in Newfoundland

He studied computer engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canadian Lawyer reported. His co-op jobs included the core audio technology team at Electronic Arts, where he built a track editor for Need for Speed: World, and network monitoring work at the National Research Council, according to his Spellbook profile.

Inventing the Mune Instrument

After graduating he co-founded Mune with composer Andrew Staniland to build a new electronic instrument that let audiences see a live performance. The Kickstarter missed its target, and he told Focused Chaos that meeting drum machine inventor Roger Linn convinced him the market was too small. A small angel check also taught him a lesson: about half of it went to legal fees for setting up the company and protecting its design.

Building Spellbook for Lawyers

He went on to lead engineering at NOCLand, a network monitoring company, before co-founding Spellbook with lawyer Daniel Di Maria and designer Matt Mayers. The company started in 2018 as Rally in St. John's, Newfoundland, and first tried to help small businesses handle legal work without lawyers. Customers wanted their lawyers involved, so the team built tools for lawyers instead, and Spellbook launched its generative AI contract reviewer in 2022.

Personal Life

He enjoys the philosophy of mind, electronic music and mountain biking in Canada.
