API documentation Open source
Laventure is building Scalar on the idea that one OpenAPI file can give every company docs, SDKs, and MCP servers as good as Stripe's, and Scalar's free, open-source API reference has already put that idea in front of a wide base of developers.
“We think every company deserves Stripe-level docs, SDKs, and MCP servers from day zero, not just the ones with a platform team to build them,” reads the company page of Scalar, where Marc Laventure is co-founder and CEO. Scalar turns an OpenAPI document into interactive API references, docs sites, SDKs, and MCP servers for AI agents.
A Website Builder and an Exit
Before Scalar, Laventure co-founded Launchaco, a website builder, with Cameron Rohani. His GitHub profile says Namecheap acquired Launchaco, and the two later started Scalar together with Hans Pagel.
Building Scalar Around OpenAPI
Scalar's company story traces its open-source roots to a first contribution: “Twelve years ago I built a Twitter module for Jasper, an open-source voice assistant,” it says, adding that seeing other people use that merged code made a lasting impression.
In a March 2025 conversation with API Evangelist's Kin Lane, Laventure laid out why Scalar centers its API client and docs on the OpenAPI specification instead of inventing a new format. Lane wrote that the approach “can help reduce the complexity across API operations” and praised how the company balances open source with its paid business.
A Ten-Person Company With Large Customers
Scalar describes itself as “a small team (10) of engineers and designers.” Its customer page lists docs for Thomson Reuters, Zoom, Lufthansa, and Clerk, and its investors include General Catalyst, Kindred Ventures, Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch, and GitHub co-founder Tom Preston-Werner.
