Co-founder and CEO · Moderne

OpenRewrite creator Ex-Netflix

Why watch

Schneider is turning automated refactoring, an idea he started at Netflix, into the way large companies keep billions of lines of code current.

Jonathan Schneider is co-founder and CEO of Moderne, a code modernization company in Miami, Florida, that he started in 2020 with Olga Kundzich. He is best known as the creator of OpenRewrite, an open-source project for automated code refactoring.

OpenRewrite at Netflix

He began OpenRewrite on Netflix's engineering tools team, where the culture gave product engineers wide freedom. In a Techstrong interview he explained the problem: when the team wanted engineers to move from one version of Java or a framework to the next, “we couldn't put any gates in CI.” Automated changes that engineers could simply accept were the way around it.

Pivotal and the road to Moderne

He moved on to Pivotal, where he worked on the Spring team, founded the Micrometer project for application metrics, and worked on Spinnaker. There he and Kundzich visited large enterprises such as JPMorgan and Fidelity, and saw how much code those companies carried. “One of our customers has 500 million lines of source code, which is just an unfathomable number,” he told Refresh Miami. “It's crazy but that's the situation at a bank or a retailer.”

The founders moved the company from Seattle, Washington, to Miami in February 2022. Schneider describes Moderne's job as change across a whole business: “moving from one cloud platform to another, one database to another, one language version to another, and doing so horizontally across the whole business,” as he put it to Refresh Miami in 2025.
