Zhang built Vizard so beginners could edit video by editing a transcript, and the tool now competes for creators who want low-cost short clips from long talks.
Gary Zhang is the founder of Vizard, an AI video editing tool that cuts long webinars, events, and speeches into short clips for social media.
Struggling With Professional Editing Software
Zhang has said he started Vizard after trying to learn video editing as a beginner. He found professional software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro overwhelming and kept abandoning his edits, he wrote when he introduced Vizard on Hacker News in February 2023.
Combining Three Models to Edit by Transcript
With a background in AI, he trained several deep learning models to work together: a computer vision model that segments video into pieces, a speech-to-text model that transcribes the audio, and a scene-change detector. Combined, they let a user trim a video by editing its transcript text. Vizard has since grown into a clipping, captioning, and team editing product with free and paid plans.
