Gangwon Jo

Co-founder and CEO

Moreh

AI infrastructure softwareSeoul, South Korea
Why watch

As a graduate student Jo led the build of what he calls Korea's first GPU supercomputer, made from gaming cards, and at Moreh he is writing the software that lets AI models train and run on AMD, Tenstorrent and other accelerators.

Gangwon Jo is co-founder and chief executive of Moreh, an AMD-backed company with offices in Seoul, South Korea, and Santa Clara, California, that builds infrastructure software for training and serving AI models on AMD chips and other accelerators. A competitive programmer turned supercomputer architect, he has run Moreh since 2021 after a year as its chief architect.

Competitive Programming in Daegu and Seoul

Jo attended Daegu Science High School in Daegu, South Korea, and won a silver medal at the 2005 International Olympiad in Informatics in Nowy Sącz, Poland. At Seoul National University he studied computer science and engineering on a presidential science scholarship, graduated summa cum laude in 2010 and twice reached the ACM-ICPC World Finals, placing 14th in 2007 and 19th in 2010, according to his personal site.

Building the Chundoong Supercomputer

He stayed at Seoul National University for a PhD under Professor Jaejin Lee, finishing in 2020 with a thesis on compiling OpenCL programs for FPGAs, which are reprogrammable chips. In the university's Center for Manycore Programming he was lead architect of Chundoong, which he describes as the first GPU supercomputer in Korea. Built from low-cost gaming GPUs with a homemade water cooling system, it ranked 277th on the TOP500 list of the world's fastest computers in November 2012. He also helped build SnuCL and SnuRHAC, software that lets programs use accelerators spread across many machines as if they sat in one.

Joining Moreh After ManyCoreSoft

From 2016 to 2020 Jo was chief technology officer of ManyCoreSoft, where he led development of iML, a GPU-accelerated machine learning framework for financial uses such as credit scoring, and designed high-performance computing systems for companies, research institutes and universities. He joined Moreh as chief architect in October 2020 and became chief executive a year later. Moreh's software runs AI workloads on AMD hardware and on other accelerators such as Tenstorrent's, according to his Kisaco Research speaker biography.

Teaching at Seoul National University

Since 2024 Jo has also taught as an adjunct assistant professor in Seoul National University's Graduate School of Data Science. MIT Technology Review included him on its Innovators Under 35 Korea list in 2022, and he received a Prime Minister's Commendation from the South Korean government in December 2025.
