Test automation Stackdriver
Belcher is building mabl around an AI testing agent that learns each application over time, so quality checks can keep pace with faster software releases.
Dan Belcher is co-founder of mabl, a Boston, Massachusetts, company that uses AI to create and run software tests for web, mobile, and API applications. He previously co-founded Stackdriver, a cloud monitoring service Google bought in 2014, and is known for building tools that take routine operations work off engineering teams.
An English major who built a computer
His family could not afford a computer when he was young in the 1980s. In high school he picked up the concepts quickly and built his own machine. He wanted to study literature and did, then took tech support jobs to pay the bills. An internship at Microsoft, he told HackerNoon, “flipped the switch for me to focus on tech as a career.”
Microsoft, VMware, and Stackdriver
He worked on infrastructure strategy at Microsoft and VMware from 2003 to 2009, then joined Sonian, a startup that was one of Amazon Web Services’ beta customers. “I saw that we could build and scale a business with no physical infrastructure investments,” he said. Teams were still building their own tools to monitor cloud systems, which led him to co-found Stackdriver in 2012. After Google bought it, he stayed at Google for almost three years.
Starting mabl
He and Izzy Azeri, his longtime collaborator, left Google in early 2017. “Izzy and I are entrepreneurs at heart and we missed the thrill of building great teams, creating brand new products, and working together,” he said. They surveyed and interviewed hundreds of people in DevOps and settled on quality assurance as the step slowing teams down.
In October 2025 mabl introduced what it calls an agentic testing teammate. “This new work is built on the idea that an agent can become an integral part of your testing team,” he said at the launch.
