Retell AI

Seed / early growth AI voice agents
Why watch Wu built Retell AI so phone AI responds fast enough that a call still feels like talking to someone.

Bing Wu is co-founder and CEO of Retell AI, the platform for building production phone agents aimed at contact-center and mid-market BPO work. He and the founding team started in live-stream dubbing, hit a latency wall, and pivoted the same conversational-audio obsession into telephony agents developers and operators can ship.

Seven seconds of dubbing latency

In a Retell founder interview Wu recounted the first product: "We were actually initially building a live streaming dubbing software" so foreign streamers could reach English audiences. Traction died on delay: "That product had seven seconds of latency." Community feedback asked why generation could not be AI-driven; that question became the new mission.

Turn-taking as the product wedge

Retell's technical bet is conversational realism on the phone. "We built our own turn-taking model that can detect when the end of thought is," Wu said, "and start generating a response whenever we think the end of thought is there." Semantic and audio cues replace crude silence detection so agents interrupt and resume more like people. The company began as a developer API, then widened into what Wu calls a more complete contact-center growth platform for automated calls.

From API to AI BPO

Wu frames the commercial target as mid-tier enterprises with hundreds of human agents that need CRM integrations, warm transfers, and analytics — "an end-to-end one-stop contact centre solution" closer to AI BPO than a toy voice demo. Near-term honesty matters: focus on reliable L1/L2 tickets, hallucinations, and tone before claiming total replacement. "If we improve the reliability of our agents, we could already replace 60, 70, even 80 percent of such offshore BPOs," he argued, with follow-through on brand voice.

On bringing models into contact centers

Longer term he states the job simply: "our job is to bring those models to contact centers to help them solve... more and more advanced issues and problems more reliably." The through-line is production telephony — latency, turn-taking, integrations — so builders own phone agents instead of waiting on a traditional BPO roadmap.
