Enterprise AI agents Distributed systems
Shafaat designed the retrieval systems behind Vectara as its chief architect and now runs the company as it sells cited AI agents that large companies can host in their own data centers.
Tallat Shafaat is co-founder and CEO of Vectara, a Palo Alto, California, software company whose platform builds AI agents that answer from a company’s own documents and cite their sources. He started Vectara in 2020 with Amr Awadallah and Amin Ahmad, served as its chief architect, and is now listed as CEO on the company’s about page.
A PhD on Peer-to-Peer Networks at KTH
Shafaat earned a bachelor’s degree at the Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute in Pakistan, then a master’s degree and a PhD at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, according to his Vectara biography as published by Equilar.
His 2013 doctoral thesis, “Partition Tolerance and Data Consistency in Structured Overlay Networks,” studied how large peer-to-peer systems keep data correct when parts of a network lose contact with each other. Its abstract opens: “Structured overlay networks form a major class of peer-to-peer systems, which are used to build scalable, fault-tolerant and self-managing distributed applications.”
Indexing the Knowledge Graph at Google
At Google he worked as a senior software engineer on Google Search and Google Ads. The same biography describes him as a core member of the Google Knowledge Graph indexing team, where he designed and built systems that processed petabytes of data and served up to 200,000 queries per second.
Chief Architect, Then CEO, at Vectara
Shafaat co-founded Vectara with Awadallah and Ahmad and spent its early years as chief architect of the retrieval and answer-checking stack the platform runs on.
When Vectara launched a conversational AI product in September 2025, he described the problem it was built to fix: “In order to realize the full growth potential of AI, enterprises can no longer settle for frustrating end-user experiences created by chat systems that produce inaccurate, inconsistent or incomplete answers.” Vectara’s about page now lists him as co-founder and CEO.
