Sharma ran data teams at Tesla and Citizen, where he saw models fail in ways uptime checks missed, and now runs Hamming AI, which tests AI voice agents with simulated calls before customers hear them.
Sumanyu Sharma is co-founder and CEO of Hamming AI, a San Francisco, California, company that tests AI voice and chat agents with simulated callers and monitors their real calls for failures.
Publishing X-Ray Research at the University of Waterloo
He studied engineering at the University of Waterloo and made the dean's list. As an undergraduate he was first author of a 2016 paper on finding similar medical X-ray images using compact binary codes, according to AI Engineer.
Scaling Machine Learning at Tesla
After work on data center simulations at Virtual Power Systems, he joined Tesla and became a senior staff data scientist. He built machine learning systems for an AI-powered sales program that grew to hundreds of millions of dollars in yearly revenue, according to his Y Combinator profile. There he learned that models can keep producing believable outputs while quietly getting worse.
Making Sense of Police Radio at Citizen
He then led data at Citizen, the public safety app, where the team turned noisy police radio audio into alerts, combining automated processing with human checks. He has said Citizen's monthly active users grew fourfold during his time there.
Co-founding Hamming
He co-founded Hamming with Marius Buleandra, a former Citizen colleague, and the company went through Y Combinator's Summer 2024 batch. They first built testing tools for prompts and language model pipelines, then saw voice agent teams calling their own agents by hand over and over to check each change. Hamming now automates those calls and red-teams agents for healthcare, banking and other regulated industries.
