Schneier is building Commenda so a small company can open and run entities abroad with the same compliance tools that only large multinationals could afford before.
Spencer Schneier is co-founder and chief executive of Commenda, a global entity and tax compliance platform with teams in San Francisco and Bengaluru, India. He started the company with Yaacov Tarko, who serves as chief technology officer.
Leaving College for Startups
Schneier grew up on the East Coast and studied math and economics in North Carolina before leaving college in his third year in 2017, he said in a 2024 Business Insider essay. He then worked as a baseball analyst and later joined a startup run by two Indian co-founders.
Finding the Idea in Mumbai, India
In 2021 he traveled to Mumbai and Bengaluru, where local founders described how hard it was to register or expand a business in other countries. An early-stage investor offered $100,000 on the idea, and Schneier persuaded Tarko to leave Google so the two could move to Bengaluru without a fixed plan.
Building Commenda Across Two Countries
Commenda began building in early 2022. Schneier has said a visa delay with India's Ministry of Corporate Affairs held up his own business registration for months. In June 2026 the company announced a $9 million seed round led by Pelion Venture Partners and Bling Capital, saying it had served more than 500 companies across 74 countries.
