Doble left law firm practice after less than a year to start Alexi in 2017 and has spent nearly a decade building AI that writes research memos and handles litigation work for lawyers in Canada and the US.
Mark Doble is co-founder and CEO of Alexi, a Toronto, Ontario, company that writes legal research memos and automates litigation tasks for law firms and in-house teams. He has a background in both law and software engineering.
Studying Law at Queen's
He became interested in AI and natural language processing while studying law at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, according to BetaKit. He then worked at a law firm for less than a year before leaving to start his own company.
Founding Alexi in 2017
He started Alexi in 2017 and later brought in Sam Bhasin, an engineer who had worked at Bombardier, as co-founder and CTO. In 2018 Alexi was one of 10 companies accepted into Techstars' AI accelerator in Montréal, Quebec. By 2024 the company said several hundred law firms used its software.
Rethinking the Billable Hour
On The Geek in Review podcast in December 2024, he argued that AI tools should push law firms to rethink how they measure work. "It's incumbent on the legal field to start to think more critically about how are we measuring the right output of a lawyer," he said. He has also returned to Queen's to speak at its law school's Conflict Analytics Lab.
